We aim to develop efficient and robust catalysts to drive CO₂ reduction and hydrogenation into energy dense fuel. We have 5 teams working synergistically on Electrocatalysts, Integrated Nanocatalysts and Single-atom Catalysts and Photo-catalysis.

In our Integrated Nanocatalysts team, led by Professor Zeng Hua Chun, we synthesise heterogeneous catalysts on a nano- or sub-nano scale in various 3D-shapes and conformation, for enhanced selectivity and hydrogenation of CO₂ to methanol.

We have 2 teams working on Single-atom Catalysts, helmed by Associate Professor Yan Ning and Assistant Professor Lu Jiong. A/P Yan’s team focuses on atomic layer deposition or co – precipitation methods, coupled with basic principles in coordination chemistry and colloidal chemistry to enhance prolonged stability and performance. They are also working on developing a ‘dynamic’ catalyst and materials to achieve one – step conversion of methanol into more complex, value-added chemicals. Dr Lu’s team applies STM/AFM with atomic resolution for the characterisation of graphene supported single atom catalysts. His team also focuses on the development of high density single – atom catalysts for electrochemical conversions.

Our latest addition to the GEP umbrella is Assistant Professor Wu Jie, who specialises in development of photocatalysis for CO₂ conversion and is spearheading a project investigating various photo-activation strategies for converting CO₂ to value-added chemicals.
