Scale-Up

Complete transformation of the current carbon-based economy to a carbon-free economy is the ultimate long-term vision. To achieve this, our NUS Green Energy Programme supports full spectrum of expertise, from-material-to-process. Building on the efforts from other thrusts, we combine ab initio modelling studies, advanced in situ characterisation, high throughput screening, gas separation, process design & optimisation, economic analysis and life-cycle evaluation for real-world implementation of our technologies. Currently, we have 2 teams working on process scale-up and intend to expand this research thrust further in 2020/21.

Associate Professor Zhao Dan seeks to develop efficient and sustainable approaches to translate novel technologies based on advanced porous materials towards commercialisation. A proper selection of scalable chemistries and process modification is undertaken to improve product quality, consistency and economics of the materials and relevant technologies. Elaborate and painstaking laboratory protocols can be simplified for the scale-up scenarios, which are integrated with the aid of in-situ monitoring and systematic characterisation. This sets the foundation for the scale-up and commercialisation of adsorption and catalytic processes based on advanced porous materials.Assistant Professor Wu Jie will be utilising continuous flow reactors to enhance efficacy and efficiencies of photoredox catalysis, photo hydrogen atom transfer process and merging the photoredox and transition-metal catalysis in his photo-activated conversion of CO2 into value-added chemicals.
