We have 3 teams driving this research thrust, with the aim of reducing the cost for practical implementation.
Led by Professors Karimi and Farooq, the process system engineering (PSE) team plays a key enabler role to support all the other thrusts in this programme to guide research in sensible and most promising directions. It offers a complete world-leading suite of expertise, methods, and tools such as process design and simulation, process development and demonstration, process synthesis and integration, industrial energy efficiency, structural and parametric optimisation, separation science, supply chain management, and lifecycle analysis.
Associate Professor Kawi’s team has optimised and tailor-made a customised zeolite membrane-based reactor with high selectivity, high water flux and high mechanical strength to concentrate methanol yield up to 80% at 40 bar.
Assistant Professor Wang and team use multi-scale systematic analysis methods from plant to planetary to assess the environmental footprint of processes, by identifying boundary transgressions and quantifying social-economical returns of novel technologies. This ensures that chemical processes and innovative technologies are operating safely within the critical ecological limits of the Earth. The planetary boundaries, along with costs and revenues are evaluated as system-level metrics along the cradle-to-gate/grave life cycle. Together with other teams, we can perform system-level optimisation to achieve a cost-effective, carbon-neutral energy transition.
